Christchurch Airport has unveiled a ''new long-term proposal'' for a new airport in the Tarras region.
In a statement yesterday, it said it was about to begin discussions on the potential of building a "world-class sustainable airport" on 750 hectares of land bordering State Highway 8 and 8A.
The current concept was to start with a 2.2-kilometre, jet-capable runway.
The project team would consult with people across the South Island- the top priority being conversations with the people who lived closest to the site.
$45 million had been spent on the project so far – which included purchasing the land.
