A wide range of talented young local musicians have finished their music exams for the year in both of the ABRSM and Trinity College exam boards, and have passed with stunning results. From piano, theory, guitar, clarinet, flute, saxophone, and violin, many students challenged themselves to practise like they’d never practised before, showing their dedication to their chosen instruments.
The students were taught by Ann-Marie Lake, Naomi Carleton, Liz Ritchie, Rosanne Forde, and Helen Carter, who are all very proud of their students’ achievements. Woodwind and jazz teacher Helen Carter said that she is incredibly proud of where her students have come in the exam process, “when students are working hard to make progress with their musical playing the exams become a great way of measuring success. They can provide a great source of motivation and provide a structured syllabus towards a defined goal… exams don't suit everyone though, and there are many ways to improve you playing.”
Fourteen-year-old Mount Aspiring College student Kimiya Byrne passed her grade six clarinet exam with a high merit, and said that she would often wake up very early in the morning to practise her scales in preparation for her exam, “[the exam] motivated me to practise a lot and gave me something to work towards. I learned that hard work pays off... it gives you a sense of achievement to complete something you have worked so hard towards.”
