Lake Hāwea singer/songwriter Anna van Riel took home first place for Best Children’s Song at this year’s Australian Songwriters Association Awards in Sydney last week. This is the second time Anna has taken home first place in the ASA's after winning with her children's song 'Cooking up a song' in 2016, and gaining second place for her song ‘Mr H2O’ in 2018.
Anna’s winning song ‘Throw out the grain’ was also a finalist in the International Songwriting Competition this year.
Van Riel said a highlight of the award was the amazing connections she made from travelling over to Sydney. “That's always hugely valuable to me,” she said.
“[The award] also offers extra support when applying for arts funding. Receiving awards shows that I work hard at my craft and that I take my work seriously, which is an assurance to funding bodies like Creative NZ and NZ on Air.”
