NASA balloon launch - Live updates

UPDATE:  Tuesday April 25  (11.02am)  We have a NASA super pressure balloon launch!

The airport is now open and roads open.  

An official release will follow in a couple of hours from NASA once the balloon has pressurized.

UPDATE:  8.50am, Tuesday April 25 -  Wanaka Airport is now closed and roads will close in 30 minutes time.  The NASA team has pulled the balloon out of the box  —inflation is scheduled to begin shortly with lift-off planned in about an hours time

UPDATE:  7.24am, Tuesday April 25 - Wanaka Airport will close in approximately 90 minutes for NASA balloon launch.

Launch Viewing Information

Wanaka Airport officials advise that local residents and visitors will have the best vantage points for the launch from:

  •   •  The Hawea Flat side of the Clutha River

  •   •  Atop Mount Iron

  •   •  On the hill on the Hawea side of the Red Bridge by Kane Rd.


Road Closure Information

SH6 will be closed for up to an hour during the launch.  It will be closed from approximately 100m from the airport gate all the way to Luggate.  

The closure will start once the balloon inflation commences.   Detour via Haweas Flat.

This will be somewhere between 8am and 11.30am on launch day.

Mt Barker Rd & Stevenson Rd will not be closed for the launch this year.

UPDATE:  5.15am, Tuesday April 25 - Launch Attempt Scheduled for NASA 

NASA is targeting this morning (Tuesday, April 25), to conduct a super pressure balloon (SPB) test flight launching from Wanaka Airport.

If weather is conducive for launch, lift-off is scheduled between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. The team is currently targeting late in the window for launch.

This is the eighth scheduled launch attempt for NASA's 2017 Wanaka Balloon Campaign.
